I'd say to go with a Strat. They are an all around great guitar for both beginners and experts. They are good for any style of music, and they have great playability. Plus, a nice standard Strat doesnt kill your budget.

I suggest a nice Strat. They are an all around great guitar. They are good for any type of music and they have great playability. Plus, a nice standard Strat shouldn't cost too mush.

I have been playing acoustic for a while and I am now wanting to purchase an electric.
I think I know what kind of axe I want to start with, but I am getting confused when it comes to the rest of the rig. I live in a small apartment and planned on running the guitar through my small mixer and just listen through the headphones, so I am not interested in purchasing an amp at this time. I am interested in developing more of a blues/jazz or a classic rock sound.

Is it a mistake to not get an amp right away?
What kind of effects do I need? (if any)
Would it be worth my time/$$ to get a DSP that simulates various amps like the "Line 6 AM4 Pedal Amp Modeler"?

Any comments and/or opinions would be welcomed.
If this is not the appropriate place for this post, I apologize in advance. I’m a newbie to this site.

Thanks Smile

It probably is a good idea to get some kind of modeler or floor pedal setup, because half of a guitar's sound is what it's going through. With an acoustic you want really hi-fi equipment because the guitar should already sound great, and you're just trying to replicate it as close as possible through a mixer. Electrics, on the other hand sound kinda dry and lifeless direct through a mixer, and usually need the help of an amp simulator, or modeler, if not through an amp itself. That's why there are so many amp manufacturer's out there, because each of them impart their personality on the signal. Try a bunch of different boards, or effects, if you can before you buy. You'll love some of them, and wanna wretch from some of 'em.

You could do worse than trying out the Behringer Vamp 2. It's very good for it's price. Sounds really good through headphones and with the right amplificaton (which ain't easy to find) will sound good live too.

The V-amp 2 looks like it might work for my needs at the moment. I’m not worrying about a good live sound right now. I just want something that a can jam by myself in my headphones or play long with tracks on my mac.
Unfortunately, I go to college in the middle of a cornfield so trying something gear before I buy is not a luxury I have. That’s why I appreciate everyone’s input.

Any one else have a piece of gear they like?

..if you are pretty serious....buy one you will grow into....about 500.00 price range.
There is nothing wrong with used ones either....
Find one that you feel like there is no struggle in playing and one that reflects your musical feel.
I would recommend looking at an Ibanez....but there are a lot of nice guitars out there for the money.
